Using an authentication app for the first time can feel a bit confusing, so we've provided some general instructions below to help guide you through the setup. These steps reflect how most authenticator apps work.
- Download and open the authentication app
- When you first open the app, you may see a sign-in page
- Look for the Skip option (usually in the top right corner)
- You do not need to sign in or create an account unless you choose to
- Add a new account
- Tap the plus (+) icon, typically found in the top right corner
- Select 'Other' (or similar) from the list of options
- Choose 'Or enter code manually'
- Enter your account details
- Account name: Enter "HMRC Government Gateway" (or any name you prefer to help you recognise the account)
- Secret Key: Enter the full key provided by your previous accountant
- Press 'Finish' to complete the setup
- Generate your access code
- After finishing, the app will generate a 6-digit access code
- Each code is valid for approximately 30 seconds before a new one is generated
Important: You’ll need to enter an access code each time you log into your Business Tax account.
